Kindness Kounts

Take time to be kind.  Rude and inconsiderate people stink right?  Something I've learned about myself is that I have to consciously smile or I look mad!  People used to ask me all the time, "what's wrong".  I never understood it?  I'd think "I'm fine, having a good day, why do you ask?"  What I learned about myself is that I have a look about me that just isn't "peppy".  At first this kind of bothered me.  People are often drawn to the peppy people.  But for me, peppy people seem fake.  What I decided was to really work on being a positive, kind person.  Don't get me wrong, I have BAD days and days I'm not so nice.  But overall I try to smile, a lot!  I developed a little list, I call Kindness Kounts and I try to do several of these each day.  They are simple, nothing like organize a charity event.  I don't believe in Karma, but it is true (most of the time) that you get what you give.  Here's my list:

  1. Give a stranger a compliment
  2. When you're driving "let" someone in
  3. Hold the door for someone
  4. Help a mom with bags, kids, whatever!
  5. Slow down, notice people, smile
  6. Tell a server, sales person, your co-worker or your spouse! "you're doing a great job!"
  7. Don't be rude to a telemarketer, they're just doing their job
  8. Text a friend you haven't talked to in a while that you've been thinking of them and hope they're well
  9. Ask someone how they're doing (with sincerity and an actual interest)
  10. When someone is talking negatively about someone, say something positive about them
I know this is an unusual post for me, but I've been thinking about it a lot.  I'm a very sensitive person, so if you're rude to me it's on my mind for a long time.  I'm learning to let it go, but I still struggle.  So let's all try to be more positive, more kind, and more aware of others!

What's on your kindness list?

  1. It's so funny that people think you are mad when you aren't. The same thing is true for me. I'm actually rarely mad but my students used to think I was mad if there wasn't a smile on my face. I try to do all of the things you mentioned. Overall, I want to be encouraging to others every chance I get. It's something I work on purposely.

  4. You know just today I've been thinking how what you give is what you get. I'm a believer in karma, things haven't been going too well for me and while I see it all going right for my friends, well it can get a little difficult and I can feel myself getting a bit self-pitying, which really isn't me. I'm off to text a friend now on your advice and get back to my usual PMA. Thank you. X

  6. I agree. I think people (including myself) have become selfish and can't take 2 seconds out of their time to show kindness. I see it a lot driving. People will just flat out run you off the road. It used to make me so mad but now I just ignore it. I try and let people over too when driving.

  8. Lulu I wholeheartedly agree with you! I feel especially bad for #7 telemarketers....like you said it's their job....their source of income...something they need to pay the bills, put food on the table, etc. This is a great post and a great list! Kindness definitely Kounts in my book:)! P.S. You don't realize how the smallest things like a smile, compliment, etc. can make a difference in someone's day:)!

  9. I really enjoyed this post, LuLu! It's the little changes in our behavior that can really uplift someone else. I know when I am having a not-so-great day, a small act of kindness from a stranger can make a big impact on how I feel the rest of the day. We can all benefit from being a little kinder to others because it always pays itself forward!

  10. I love these! I try to do something kind every day. I did the "26 Acts of Kindness" and that was awesome - paid for the Starbucks for everyone in line behind me. Generally, I try to practice a lot of the ones you mention and I also try and do something nice for a homeless person when I see one (can't help them all, but at least one!)
