Denim DIY Project

distressing your denim, denim alterations, fall denim

At 5'1" I almost always have to have my denium altered.  It can get a little frustrating (you ladies that are vertically challenged feel my pain).  Some good tailors can use the "original hem" to make them look typically the same, however it doesn't always work.  Then you're left with an old fashioned looking pair of jeans - booo...

BUT today I'm sharing with you how to "distress" those edges and make them look more natural!

Before:

Yucky, old fashioned right?

Ok, let's get to it!
What you need:
  • Bleach: I like to use Clorox splashless bleach.  It's a little thicker than the watery stuff, so you don't "splash" beach everywhere and later say, "OH no!!!"
  • cup for the bleach
  • Q Tips
  • cheese grater
Step 1:  Dip the Qtip in the bleach and dab the edge of the denium (see below).  Let the bleach "sit" for a while, 10 minutes or so.  Check on it and if you need to add more bleach.  I also touch up where the edge meets the side stitching.  Depending on how distressed you want this to look you might need to do several coats.

Step 2:  Use a cheese grater to rough up the edges.  Do this again until you feel it's been distressed enough.

Step 3:  Wash your denim as normal.  *TIP* After you've washed them, take a look.  Do you need to distress a little more?  You can always do more!

My final product!

  1. What a great idea! I don't think I've ever had to alter a pair of jeans but that's because I'm on the other end of the spectrum at 5'7"!

  8. I always always have to get my jeans altered or I fold them in from under....and I'm average height!!! They make these jeans way to long....and I HATE when they bunch up at the end! Such a great DIY idea! I will definitely test it on a pair of jeans that I don't wear to see how they turn out!
