What Happened?

Happy Thursday!  Today is inspiration Thursday and not inspiration for fashion but for life.  A way of life.  This post has been on my mind since early November.  I like SLS to be a happy place, a light-hearted place where you can be inspired by fashion, and the occasional home and recipe posts.  In January I felt a need to write some more serious posts as I struggle with life sometimes (more than sometimes).  Although I may seem like I have it all together I don't and wanted to share a little of that piece of me with you.

So back to November.  I received a very negative comment from a reader.  I didn't post it, I didn't feel the need to.  Right or wrong, I deleted it and that was that.  However I started reading some comments on fellow blogger sites, their Instagram feeds, and really...  the amount of negative, personal attacks is astounding.  It's shameful.

So my question is, what happened to the good 'ol saying, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all..."?  It almost seems to be en vogue to say whatever is on your mind, wrong, right, if it hurts someone feelings, well too bad.  I'm just being honest right?  I'll just tell you how I feel and let the chips fall where they may.  Since when is it ok to hurt some one's feelings just because you want to share what's on your mind?  You never know what is going on in that person's life.  Maybe their father just passed away or they learned they have cancer.  Life, no matter who it is, is precious, and we shouldn't stomp, punch, or slap someone verbally and think it's ok.

No one is perfect.  Everyone has bad days and say something rude without thinking because you're stressed or upset.  But why must you say and even comment something so rude?  It's a purposeful action that doesn't need to be shared.  What good is coming of it?  Life is hard.  No matter who you are.  Why not be kind and build each other up with meaningful, encouraging words.  My hope for you is that there is love in your life today and every day.  In turn, show someone positivity, love, and encouragement today.  Let's remember this special week that Jesus, the greatest man who ever lived died for us because HE loved.

Special passages to have the light of Christ in your life today and always:

John 13: 34  "A new command I give you: Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

Romans 12:10  "Be devoted to one another in love.  Honor one another above yourselves.

1 Peter 3:8  "Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble."

Thank you for stopping by.  Wishing you love today!

  1. Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the the three is love. This is a command from our Lord, and can be very hard at times. But when it comes down to the bottom line, we are here on this earth to bring glory to Him and bless Him in all things. And by loving those who are hurtful shows our obedience to our Lord. God's blessings to you.

  3. 1 Corinthians 13:13! The greatest of these is love! I try to remember that. My grandmother always used to say that it doesn't cost anything extra to be nice (we're from Alabama. She was the ultimate southern lady). I don't understand meanness. I really don't. Keep your head up and remember you are loved!

  5. Lulu, I am sorry you received a negative, rude comment which you certainly don't deserve.
I always feel in my (German) culture, criticism and "knowing better" is a lot more common than positive thinking and encouragement (as in the American culture). I work in a multicultural environment including a lot of North Americans and often notice that.
Unfortunately more and more bloggers have to deal with this kind of bad behaviour. Unnecessary, sad and I don't understand why.
    Have a wonderful Easter!

  6. I completely agree, and actually just wrote a similar post on Tuesday about this. I don't know why people feel the need to be so cruel. It's as if they don't think that others are human beings, with real problems and struggles. As style bloggers, we do put ourselves out there, but we are not models, just average people. I always say, if you don't like something, don't read it! Just move on. But don't be hurtful before doing so. Great post :)

  8. I totally agree with you! I agree with "if you don't have anything nice to say, stay quiet", but there are many people that don't think the same way. Then I would say that we can't please everybody, there's no way of doing that. There's another quote that says "people will love you because of the way you are. People will hate you, because of the way you are!" So you see, it all depends on so many things. It's true that no one can ever judge or pretend to know what is going on in someone's life... I very seldom share some facts of my life, but 4 years ago BOTH my father and mother passed away. I was in total grief for 3 years, and slowly started getting better from last year on. I lost many friends during this process. They just wanted smiles, not tears. So I now thank Heaven for the friends I "lost", because they weren't true friends. I really hope that now you are fine, but like you said, sometimes we have things going on in our lives, that people can't guess - and so, I advise these people to be quiet! :) Hope you have an amazing Easter and I really loved this post!

  11. I don't typically post comments, but wanted to say that this was a really brave post and a kind response to those who are posting those unkind things. Also--and I know this is a strange segue--have you listed to this NPR broadcast on trolling and the troll who apologized? It is very affecting.

  12. Such an inspiring post! Just the other day, some friends and I were discussing the flipside of this: how we assume those we love know how much we appreciate them. So I've been also trying to say the nice things that I assume are obvious.
